PAgriSap is a water retainer that, when incorporated into a soil absorbs and retains large amounts of water and nutrients. PAgriSap releases the absorbed water and nutrients, in the amounts and when demanded by the plant. This is an important distinction from most superabsorbent products that have been developed for hygiene applications to retain and not release liquids, PAgriSap from Polykem is a patented superabsorbent co-polymer hydrogel which absorbs up to 500 times its weight in water or aqueous solutions. It is uniquely tailored for agriculture and remains active in the soil for 10 years. The long-life activity leads to lower annual application rates and hence superior economics for farmers than can be achieved with alternative water retention products.
This property can offer benefits for many aspects of Arboriculture, Horticulture and Agriculture through increased plant yields, and crop quality, coupled with, water, and fertilizer requirements, reduced time to crop maturity, and minimised transplantation losses. Crop yield can be increased by up to 80% and water and fertiliser use reduced by 50 to 70% as soluble fertiliser is trapped by the hydrogel in the root zone. Where irrigation is not employed, PAgriSap application maintains adequate soil moisture more than three times longer than untreated soils. The action of PAgriSap on soil composition is highly beneficial, increasing soil porosity and the level of macro aggregates, alleviating subsoil compaction, and in some circumstances, rendering non arable soil suitable for agricultural use.
PAgriSap is a hydrocarbon raw material based copolymer which can also be produced from glycerine, a by-product of bio fuel manufacture. The PAgriSap manufacturing process is patented jointly with List AG, a Swiss manufacturer of novel chemical reaction equipment (www.list.ch). The Polykem-List process yields superior economics and makes the use of Polykem’s PAgriSap product economically attractive to the farmer.
